The lumbar piece helps keep the natural curve of your lower back and widens the area on which weight is distributed and balanced.

This lumbar support pad fits on other carriers as well, which is SOOO great! Have an old Ergo classic standard carrier? You can add this to the waistband for extra comfort and support.

To use it, simply slide it onto the waistband, or the buckle clasp:
