WHAT IS BALTIC AMBER?

Gintaras (Lithuanian for amber) comes from "ginte" (meaning to protect).

Amber is any natural resin which oozed its way out of a tree and eventually fossilized at any time from recent times back to many million years ago. Amber comes in many shades and colors, although the most common are cognac, honey, green, lemon yellow, ivory and cream/yellow. It is is lightweight and because it is an organic substance, each piece is unique.

Baltic amber (known as succinite) is a specific subset of amber that is found only in northern Europe: it accounts for some 80% of the known amber in the world. Between 35 and 50 million years ago, sap oozed out from a forest of conifers (probably either false larch or kauri) in the region now covered by the Baltic Sea, and eventually hardened into clear lumps. Shoved around northern Europe by glaciers and river channels, lumps of genuine Baltic amber can still be found today on the eastern coasts of England and Holland, throughout Poland, Scandinavia and northern Germany and much of western Russia and the Baltic states.  Baltic amber is uniquely known for its therapeutic qualities.

HOW DO BALTIC AMBER NECKLACES/BRACELETS WORK?

When a Baltic amber necklace is worn against the skin, the skin's warmth releases healing oils from the amber (a resin) which are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Amber is not a rock and is therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear. Children wearing amber is a very old traditional custom in Europe and the Far East.  Traditional beaded amber necklaces are a less intrusive remedy for the pain and side effects of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds. A natural analgesic, amber may help calm a baby without resorting to drugs.

ARE BALTIC AMBER NECKLACES/BRACELETS SAFE TO USE?

Beads are small and each one is knotted individually for safety.  Our necklaces are CPSIA-compliant and meet EN-71-1 safety requirements.  Baltic amber is non-toxic.  We do recommend that adult-supervision be used at all times. See our test results HERE.

QUALITY-CONTROL

Every single necklace goes through a rigorous quality check in our warehouse before we package them.  We tug hard on the string, unscrew the clasp, and test the screw.  We visually inspect all of the beads.  If there's any doubt, we do not allow it to pass.  Necklaces that do not pass inspection are mailed back to our manufacturer in Lithuania for replacement.  See our quality test results HERE.

Although we (Knickernappies) have never had any any incidents that have resulted in harm to infants, there is always a chance they will break the necklace apart and perhaps swallow one of the beads. We have gone to every extent to ensure the safety of the child, the cord is knotted between each bead, the silk cord will break if more than 12 pounds of pressure is applied, and the clasp is a screw clasp. Amber is a natural healing product that works by being next to baby's skin. The child does not have to put the beads in or around their mouths for the amber to work. This product should be used under direct supervision of an adult.
