Best of all, Under the Nile is a fantastic company that practices fair-trade practices, offers health care, provides two organic meals to its workers each day, operates a school, supports women by allowing them to work from home, and much more!

Made from 100% organic Egyptian cotton, which has received Demeter certification.  All dyes are vegetable-based and metal-free. Product is spot clean only.

Why should one use organic cotton in baby and children's clothing and toys?
Conventional cotton clothes contain pesticide residues which can end up on the baby's skin and be absorbed by the body.  In addition, cotton pesticides contaminate ground and surface water. An estimated 67 million birds are killed every year from pesticides.

Why is organic cotton so much softer then conventional cotton?
In order to get the soft feel that Demeter certified organic cotton is known for, the cotton yarn is handled with great care during the knitting or weaving process. For example, only natural starch is used during the weaving process.

About Under the Nile

Our organic cotton is grown at a Biodynamic farm in Egypt, called Sekem. Biodynamic agriculture is a method of organic farming that applies a holistic understanding of life processes. As one of the first sustainable agriculture movements, it treats soil fertility, plant growth, and livestock care as ecologically interrelated tasks emphasizing spiritual and cosmic perspectives. Sekem was founded on these principles of holistic and sustainable approach to organic agriculture and shares our values and commitment to sustainability.

Workers at the Sekem farm receive on-site healthcare, daycare and school for their children, as well as daily organic meals that are made from food grown right there on the farm.

In 2015, Sekem received The Land For Life Award from the United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD). Sekem is also certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and is a certified Fair Trade farm.
