How to prepare for first use
We
recommend washing and drying your Smartipants diapers at least one time
before using. Drying a Smartipants diaper in the dryer for the first time,
and once a week thereafter, may help seal the seams, ensuring they
remain waterproof, however line-drying the outer diaper most of the time will prolong the life of the diaper.
|
About the Fabric
Made from soft
waterproof polyester outer and super soft suedecloth lining. Smartipants uses
durable elastics and the very best YKK snaps as well. Smart Sleeve inserts are
made from microfiber terry and are trim yet very absorbent.

Our Experience

Smartipants are new to the cloth diapering world (although the creator also made Wonderoos several years ago)! Smartipants are an inexpensive, Made in the USA, one-size pocket diaper option.
Smartipants are often compared to bumGenius! V3.0 One-Size Pocket Diapers and Fuzzi Bunz One-Size Pocket Diapers. Here are our thoughts between these three diapers:
- Smartipants are Made in the USA (Fuzzi Bunz are manufactured in China, and bumGenius are manufactured in either Colorado or Egypt), and owned by Jessica and Josh, a long-time cloth diapering family.
- Smartipants feature snap closures, eliminating worries about Aplix failure.
- Smartipants seem to be lower quality, but also less expensive.
- Smartipants include one insert, wherease Fuzzi Bunz and bumGenius! include a newborn and a one-size insert.
- Smartipants have a sleeve (patent pending "Smart Sleeve") that allows the insert to come out in the wash - no need to touch dirty inserts!
- The Smart Sleeve is fairly snug and does make stuffing a little more difficult.
We are testing these out right now... so stay-tuned for more information! And let us know what you think!
We don't feel these diapers are for every baby (would need to purchase extra inserts for heavy wetters, thighs might be too large for babies with skinny thighs), but they are a solid one-size diaper at a great price that is Made in the USA!

In
2002, I set out to finally find the perfect cloth diapers. I wanted
convenient, easy to care for and comfortable diapers for my children. I
had experienced both old fashioned and modern cloth diapers and of
course the expense was a consideration. I loved the convenience of the
one-size fitted diapers available and there was also a new type of
diaper just coming out called “pocket diapers.” Both concepts were
great, and I chose pocket diapers. The diapers came in 5 different
sizes and I knew I’d need 24-36 diapers in each size. This seemed to be
a great idea, but still a very expensive one. One day my husband asked
me why we couldn’t just buy the one-size diapers in the pocket diaper
style. The answer at the time was “because that doesn’t exist.” It
wasn’t long until I had created my own pattern and sewn my first
one-size pocket diaper. I told my friends, and word spread, people
loved them! That was how I invented the very first one-size pocket
diapers and I called them Wonderoos. I proceeded to make and sell my
diapers over the next few years. We sold them to other parents who ran
baby stores and they made their way around the world. I decided after a
few years of running Wonderoos that I wanted to devote more time to my
young family, so I sold the design for Wonderoos to a lovely couple in
England. I knew they would take good care of the diaper I had designed
and the brand we had built.
I
spent several years just being mommy again, but sitting on the
sidelines watching the modernization of cloth diapers progress was hard
for me. I knew I had more to offer, but I didn’t know how I could share
my ideas with the world again. Then I met the team at Smartipants. We
shared some new ideas and we worked hard to develop a unique design for
a brand new diaper. I was able to address issues I had experienced and
those experienced by other cloth diapering moms. First, I knew I didn’t
like pulling wet or dirty inserts out of the diapers. I wanted a
cleaner system and the convenience of an all-in-one diaper where the
inserts would simply come out of the diaper in the laundering process.
I’d get the best of both worlds with a diaper that could get really
clean, but was easy to use as well. I also wanted a diaper that would
not leak. I wanted a trim fit without sacrificing absorbency. I also
wanted the ability to customize the level of absorbency for my baby
during the day and the night. I still loved the idea of keeping my
baby’s skin dry too. Smartipants is the true evolution of the modern
cloth diaper. It is all of these things and more. Economical,
environmentally friendly, easy to care for and very convenient! It has
been my pleasure to share my designs with other parents like me who
benefit from their unique features. It brings me great joy to share
with you Smartipants…they’re smarter than your average diaper!
Sincerely,
Jessica |

FAQ
1. How do I use my Smartipants Diapers?
First
place the insert into the diaper through either opening of the smart
sleeve and hold the front of the insert in place at one end, stretch
the diaper and smooth the insert flat as you pull your other hand out
of the diaper.
TIP: For overnight use,
consider stuffing with two inserts and setting the diaper to be one
size larger than you would for daytime use. Many parents also prefer to
pre-stuff their diapers at the end of their washing routine.
You
can adjust the diaper sizing by choosing the snap setting on the front
of the diaper. Your diaper arrives snapped down to the "small" setting,
which is the bottom row of snaps. To resize the diaper fully unsnap the
front of the diaper and resize.
2. How can I tell if the diaper is adjusted to fit my baby properly?
Pick
up your baby’s legs after putting the diaper on and observe how it fits
around the legs and bottom. Is it snug? If you can see space between
the diaper and their skin, then you need to refine the fit. Try a
smaller snap setting and make sure it is fastened snugly.
Remember, babies change shape frequently as they grow up. You may have
times when your relatively young baby is using their one-size diapers
on the largest setting. The same child may be on the medium setting
several months later due to increased mobility.
3. How do I wash my new diapers?
Smartipants diapers and their inserts should be washed after each use! There is no need to remove the wet insert, simply unsnap the front of
the diaper to the largest size setting to ensure it will agitate out in
the wash.
Soiled
diapers can be sprayed with a diaper sprayer or solids can be shaken
off into the toilet. Diapers can then be placed in a dry diaper pail
until you are ready to launder them.
Wash
the diaper(s) in hot water (up to 120 degrees) with no more than 1/4
(high efficiency machines) to 1/2 (top loading, regular machines) of
the detergent's recommended amount per load. DO NOT USE ANY BLEACH OR
FABRIC SOFTENERS.
If your machine does not automatically follow a hot wash with a rinse,
we recommend that you run an additional rinse cycle to remove any
lingering traces of detergent.
Tumble dry the diaper(s) on the low/warm setting.
4. What detergent can I use?
You should use a detergent that is free of dyes, enzymes, perfumes, whiteners and brighteners.
Below is a list of detergents you should NOT use when washing Smartipants:
All small & mighty with Snuggle All baby or 2x baby Arm & Hammer Fabricare or Fabricare Free Bio-Kleen Bold 2 in 1 Cheer Dr. Bronners Castille Soap Dreft ECOS Ecover ERA Gain Ivory Snow Kirkland Signature Melaluca Method ( only Free & Clear is acceptable) Mrs. Meyer's Natural Value Purex ( only Free & Clear is acceptable) SA8 Sears Shaklee Fresh Sun & Earth Trader Joe's Wisk Any brand with added fabric softener is not acceptable
5. What should I avoid?
Do
not use extra additives in your wash (like baking soda or vinegar).
These ingredients are unnecessary. Do not use fabric softeners.
6. Can I use rash creams with Smartipants?
Diaper
rashes should be treated according to your physician's recommendations.
If you need to use a rash cream, you should use a flushable liner or a
piece of fleece between your baby's bottom and the diaper to prevent
the cream from transferring onto the diapers. There are some safe rash
creams for cloth diapers, please call our customer care at
877-898-SMART for a safe rash cream recommendation.
7. How can I prevent diaper leakage?
The
number one cause of leakage is a saturated diaper that just needs to be
changed. Any diaper will leak once full. If your baby is having
problems with leaks, check this first. 99% of the time, additional
absorbency or more frequent diaper changes solves leakage problems. If
that doesn't work, we've included some other trouble-shooting tips
below.
8. What is the Smartipants™ guarantee?
We’ll
stand behind the workmanship and materials in a properly cared for
product. Our guarantee covers all components of our product including
the snaps, lining, elastic and waterproofing. We guarantee 2 years on
snaps, 60 days on elastic and materials, and 60 days on sewing and
workmanship. The warranty is extended to the original purchaser of the
diapers only. Proof of purchase is required.
Product

and materials. Diapers must arrive unstained, clean, stink-free and
